Class #5
4x4 List
February 17, 2005

Here's the 4x4 list for today's class.

1. What I Got Done

  • Researched and wrote a presentation for today's class, drawing on the analogy of the way music resonates with certain spaces to explore some of the bases and issues surrounding the textual annotation of public space.

  • Talked to Nat Bennett (MFA candidate, NYU creative writing) about collaborating on a story for a public space. Interesting chat, and he's up for writing something, as long as I choose the location.

  • Made contact with Bill Miller, who specializes in custom bookbinding.

  • Found a pricing gun that can print alphanumeric numbers. Sealomatic wrote in response to a request for more information: "Thank you for your inquiry. The PRO26 sells for $69.95 and comes with a 5 year limited warranty. The labels are packaged 21 rolls per box and sell for $40/bx in white and $45/bx in red, yellow or orange. You can order direct from us by calling our toll free number 1-800-631-2072. We accept Visa, MasterCard and American Express."

2. What I Am Going to Do

  • Do an inventory of "public words" on a selected NYC block with my digital camera and try to categorize their purpose.

  • Pick out a location for Nat's story. Think about how it might best be presented.

  • Meet with Bill Miller.

  • Look into one-line label printers.

  • Rewrite my notes for today's presentation in more coherent essay form.

  • Continue to research pricing guns and decide whether it's worth ordering the one I found.

  • Try to figure out a simple algorithm for assigning locations with particular texts.

3. Unexpected Problems; Outstanding Risk

  • Risk with the label gun is that I won't be able to change the text on the fly.

4. Insights / Surprises

  • The importance of the musical analogy on how I think about the problem of words.

  • The "niche" aspect of my project; addressing a particular focused problem without attacking "books" etc.
