"The Gratest City on Earth" Creative Time Times Square Project Ideas
February 3, 2003
Preliminary Ideas: During my visit to Times Square, I was most fascinated by the many grates lining the streets. Enveloped by steam and home to various bits of urban debris, they seemed the last vestige of the grittiness that once characterized the area. My proposal is to illuminate these grates from below with the subterranean starry sparkle of disco balls, buried beneath the surface to symbolize the square's seedy glitziness, interred in recent years beneath Disneyfied theatres and glowing stock market charts.
The ventilation shafts that lie beneath these grates are underused and often dark, even in the daytime. While the sun shines, they will be a glowing light display underneath peoples feet; at night, the sparkle will creep above ground and dance over walls and pedestrians.
